Everything in Girl Scouting is based on the Girl Scout Promise and Law, which includes many of the principals and values shared across religions. While we are a secular organization, Girl Scouts has always encouraged girls to take spiritual journeys through their faith’s religious recognitions.
Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska is building partnerships to support the spiritual development of Girl Scouts. We invite Nebraska religious organizations to join us in inspiring the next generation of female leaders by becoming Girl Scout Faith Partners.
Faith Partners provide girls with opportunities to reach their greatest potential, and faith communities benefit in many ways, including:
- Promotion of religious education
- Ministry and outreach opportunities
- Connections to girls of the same faith who are not members of a religious community
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. And, the motivating force in Girl Scouting is spiritual. We are proud of our more than 100-year history of openness to and inclusion of girls of all faiths.
Girl Scouts seeks to enhance a girl’s personal faith journey; however, we do not align ourselves with, or offer programming through the lens of, any specific religious belief or institution. We aren’t here to dictate what a girl’s faith should be or encourage her to incorporate any practice or belief into her life—we believe matters of personal faith are best left to families.
Our programming does encourage girls to explore their personal faith and develop a deeper understanding of the role it plays in their lives. That’s where our Faith Partners come in!
Girls of all grade levels can earn the My Promise, My Faith pin, which allows girls to further strengthen the connection between their faith and Girl Scouts. Once each year, a girl can earn the My Promise, My Faith pin by carefully examining the Girl Scout Law and tying it directly to tenets of her faith. Faith Partners can facilitate this journey for girls, helping them gain a deeper understanding of their religious values.
Faith Partners can also support girls as they earn Interfaith Awards, which were created by national religious organizations. These awards encourage the spiritual growth of youth members, reinforce many of the values integral to Girl Scouting, and help girls grow stronger in and learn more about their chosen faith. The brochure “To Serve God” lists the religious recognitions created by various faith groups. The brochure, a video explaining religious recognition programs, and other resources for collaborating with faith communities can be found on the P.R.A.Y Program (Programs of Religious Activities with Youth) website.
The Catholic Church supports girls through its own website. The site features religious education programs and patches that serve Catholic Girl Scouts through quality faith-based programs.
We know our Faith Partners want to see their communities thrive and grow. An investment in Girl Scouts encourages girls to develop connections to their own spiritual and religious beliefs. Here are just a few ways we can partner. As our partnership grows, so will our possibilities.
- Host a Girl Scout open house
- Hold a My Promise, My Faith workshop
- Add a bulletin blurb about Girl Scouts and/or allow us to distribute fliers about Girl Scouts
- Participate in Girl Scout Sunday or Girl Scout Sabbath – During these special days, Girl Scouts wear their uniforms to their places of worship, help with spiritual services, sponsor a special children's craft, and/or tell the congregation about their Girl Scout experiences.
Add a Girl Scout visit or My Promise, My Faith workshop to your youth ministry curriculum
